Niagara Region News

Hi there, Your steering committee had a meeting last week,( I did invite you all), and we came up with a schedule for the next few months, so here is an update on things to come.

Our December meeting is moved ahead one week because it would have been the day after the Christmas party  on the 10th and we thought it may have been a bit hard to get to a meeting after a night of merry making. So our next meeting will be on Sunday December 4th.We will be making a really neat candle holder that you can show off at the party. You will be getting another reminder before the meeting, however make a note that there will be NO meeting on December 11th.

We have made a good start on the angel project which needs to be completed for the Christmas party. In order to get this finished we are having a work party on Wednesday, November 30th, that’s next week! So if you can, come and join us at Andy’s shop after 5:00 pm, so we can get this job done.

The Christmas party is coming up on Saturday December 10th at the Amherst museum, at 6:00 pm. We have arranged for musical entertainment as well as some of our more talented members who will doing their own “thing” for our enjoyment. If you feel you have a talent you would like to share with us, bring it along. I must shamefully admit that I forgot in earlier notices to say that there will be a $10 per couple charge for the party, to offset the cost of the museum and entertainment. There is no extra charge for young children. If you have a neat candle holder complete with candle to decorate your table, please bring it along. We are also going to try and have a short Petchakutcha show. For those who are not familiar with this I will explain. Each person who enters, brings 10 digital picture slides on any topic of their own choice and they get 3, yes only three, minutes to talk about them. If you feel up to this challenge give Bob Corneck a call 741-4311 before December 7th and he will explain what we need. This is not a competition. We should have a terrific evening.

January 8th 2012. This is a regular meeting at Andy’s shop. We are planning to do some basic blacksmithing over the next few months, so we are going to do some drawing out and cross peining at this meeting and will aim to make some leaves and a fire shovel.

February 12th, Making and heat treating chisels and punches. Hopefully we will have time to cut out and decorate a shamrock.

March 11th, Forge welding, making a flux spoon the Mark Asperey way.

April 15th, Making tongs and doing the “drop tongs” weld.

May 6th, Mothers Day falls on our regular meeting day, so we will hold the meeting a week earlier so as not to get Mothers upset with us. Punch, slit and drift. We will be making a trammel and explaining pass through’s.

June 10th. Scroll work. We will be making a frame and making and fitting a scroll into it. This will probably extend into the July meeting.

As always you will get advanced notices of the meetings.

Well that should keep us busy for the new year. I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming meetings and the Christmas party, I hope you  and your families enjoy a happy and safe holiday and a wonderful New Year. Peter.

Niagara Region Christmas Party

Niagara will be holding our annual Christmas Party at the Amherst Museum on Saturday December 10th at 6:00 pm.

This is a pot luck dinner, and we ask you to byob.  (Alcoholic beverages, we supply soft drinks).  Contact Judy Larkin at jlarkin@bccis.com and 585-798-4466, or Peter Parry blacksmithpeter@live.ca and 905-894-4843 for details and what you might bring.  The museum will be beautifully decorated to get us all in the spirit of the season.

If you have a special talent you are invited to bring it along to entertain the gathering.  This is always a special evening where everyone has a great time with friends.  Come out and join us.

HO HO HO! See you there!

Genesee Forge Meeting

We had a good meeting out at our home in Mike Nelson’s barn. We practiced making mortice and tenon joints, leafs, box knots, and decorating bolt heads. That was followed by sharing a delicious vat of Gumbo. There’s nothing like washing down donuts & coffee with hot bowl of pork laden goodness. We concluded the day with a well stocked Iron In the Hat.

Thanks to all for participating.

Pork fat rules!

Niagara Picnic

Niagara Region Picnic September 11th. Amherst Museum.

Niagara had a picnic at the Amherst Museum last Sunday September 11th. The forges were up and running and there was a great lunch followed by Iron in the hat.  Our President Candice Marten and Hubby and Treasurer Brian showed up to support us, Thanks to both of you. The weather cooperated and we had a great day.

Niagara Hammer In

Hi there, I hope you are all enjoying your summer, although it is not much fun hammering away in hundred degree temps! NIAGARA has a great meeting coming up on Sunday August 14th. PLEASE NOTE: THIS MEETING WILL NOT BE AT ANDY CHAMBERS SHOP. Instead we are having a “Hammer-in “ at Paul and Connie Smiths country estate. They have a large barn, so this is a rain or shine event. Bring your portable forges , chairs, wives/Husbands and family and join us for a day of forging in the wilds of Linden. Paul tells me they even have a large, use at your own risk, pond for those who might want to cool down a bit, We will be having soft drinks, hot dogs and hamburgers for lunch. We will be doing some demo’s for your enjoyment and there will be a couple of Niagara’s forges and anvils for those of you who don’t have portable set ups. But bring your own tools if you have them. For those with electric blowers there is power available. There will be an Iron in the hat draw so bring something, preferably hand forged to donate. Looks like this will be a terrific meeting so don’t miss it. See you there. Any questions call me at 905-899-3326. or e-mail, blacksmithpeter@ live.ca ,Peter Parry.
